China Urges U.S. to Increase Imports

China on Sunday called on the United States to increase Chinese imports to help close the trading gap between the two nations.

The official New China News Agency said that ruling Politburo member Hu Qili on Saturday told visiting U.S. Sen. Chic Hecht (R-Nev.) that China is trying to increase the output of products suitable for the U.S. market.

China and the United States produce contradictory figures on their trade, and both claim to run a deficit. The discrepancy arises partly because much of China’s exports to the United States pass through Hong Kong and are registered in Chinese statistics as exports to Hong Kong.

According to U.S. statistics, trade between Peking and Washington in 1985 totaled just over $8 billion.
