The Nation - News from Dec. 9, 1986

An oil spill in the Savannah River in Georgia spread to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, as ocean tides swept the sludge into the 26,000-acre preserve. A three-mile-long oil slick extended through the preserve, affecting about one-quarter of the area. The wildlife refuge had been closed to the public during the cleanup of the oil spill, which began Thursday when a 705-foot freighter began leaking oil into the river.
