The Kuwait state security court began the trial Monday of five Palestinians charged with bomb attacks on two seafront cafes last year in which 10 people were killed and 80 wounded, legal officials said.

They said the defendants, if convicted, could face the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Only two of the defendants, Mustafa Mahmoud Said Bayari, 23, and Rafih Juma Mohammed, also 23, appeared in front of the three-judge court; the other three are reportedly being tried in absentia.
