New York City Marathon officials, who recently announced the disqualification of this year’s second-place finisher, have disqualified 24 other runners for cheating in last month’s race.
Those disqualified, including three of the top 100 finishers in the men’s division, did not pass certain video camera checkpoints, race director Fred Lebow said.
The disqualifications of John Bell, who won the men’s masters division and finished 69th overall in 2 hours 25 minutes 15 seconds; France’s Stephen King, who finished 32nd in 2:19:17; and Warren Stehling of Milwaukee, who placed 42nd in 2:21:02, marked the first time any men in the top 100 had been caught cheating.
Bell, 44, of Marion, Ind., won a trophy and was to receive $3,000 for winning in the masters division, for runners over 40. He will be replaced by David Clark of Great Britain, who finished in 2:25:35.
Poland’s Antoni Niemczak, who finished second in the men’s race, was disqualified earlier when he tested positive for anabolic steroids.
