Israeli warplanes attacked Palestinian bases in northern Lebanon, killing nine people. A Muslim radio station said one of those killed in the air raid was Mohammed Selim abu Imad, a commander of the Abu Nidal terrorist group. An Israeli spokesman said all of the planes returned safely after scoring “accurate hits” on “terrorist bases” northeast of Tripoli. Meanwhile, an Iranian mediation effort to end Lebanon’s “war of the camps” bogged down as Palestinian guerrillas and Shia Muslim Amal militiamen battled at refugee camps in Beirut and in southern Lebanon.
