A Nicaraguan appeals court upheld the 30-year prison sentence given American Eugene Hasenfus for running arms to contras fighting to overthrow the Managua government. Hasenfus, accompanied by his wife, Sally, and looking thinner than when he last appeared in public, sat impassively as Judge Armengol Cuadra confirmed the sentence. Hasenfus, who was captured Oct. 6, one day after a C-123 cargo plane he was aboard was shot down by Sandinista troops, was convicted Nov. 15 of violating public security laws, terrorism and criminal association.
