Arctic Air Invades Texas, New Mexico
Residents of Texas and New Mexico sloshed and slid through snow and freezing rain Thursday, as arctic air pushed wind chills near zero and dropped temperatures in Texas lower than those in South Dakota.
“If I were in jail right now, I’d want to stay there for a couple of more days,” said George Beeson, who works for a construction supply house in Midland, Tex., where the temperature dropped into the 20s and up to three inches of snow was on the ground.
Roads in several spots were reported to be icy and treacherous.
Guadalupe National Park in West Texas got six inches of snow, and 10 inches or more were expected in the mountains in southwest Texas. Up to a foot of snow fell in southwest New Mexico.
The wind chill dropped to 15 to 30 degrees below zero from Minnesota to the Dakotas, but warmer air moving into the Dakotas pushed the temperature at Huron, S.D., to 39 degrees Thursday afternoon, compared with 36 at San Antonio.
