Britain Reportedly OKs License to Sell Iran Radar Systems
Britain has granted an export license for six military radar systems for Iran, the London Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.
The newspaper said the order, worth the equivalent of $340 million, was to be supplied by The Plessey Company PLC. The paper said the systems were for use on Iran’s borders with the Soviet Union and Afghanistan.
It said the government’s decision to grant Plessey an export license for the equipment could provoke a political row over the sales of military equipment to Iran and Iraq, which are at war.
Plessey refused to comment on the reported deal. But the Daily Telegraph quoted unnamed British government sources as saying that a contract had been signed with Iran and that a government export license had been granted.
It quoted an unnamed Foreign Office spokesman as saying the Plessey equipment falls within government guidelines banning sales of “lethal” equipment.
