President Corazon Aquino today refused to allow ousted dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos to return to the Philippines to see his ailing 98-year-old mother, Dona Josefa.

Presidential spokesman Teodoro Benigno said Aquino was willing to send Dona Josefa to the Marcos exile home in Hawaii “if the need arises.”

Reports have circulated in Manila that Dona Josefa’s condition worsened recently. She has been cared for at the Philippine Heart Center for Asia since a civilian-backed military coup ousted her son and installed Aquino as president last February.

Benigno said Aquino opposed Marcos’ return and added: “We can bring the grand lady to Honolulu.”
