More than 200 people have been killed and 40,000 left homeless by serious floods in south and central Iran, United Nations disaster relief officials said Thursday.

The worst hit areas were the southern provinces of Fars and Bushehr, a statement said.

Crops, tree plantations, water and electricity supplies, roads and bridges suffered extensive damage in two weeks of torrential rains and flooding, it said.

In the town of Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, electricity was cut off for 10 days.
