Eight major college football programs in the East have joined with Notre Dame in a television agreement that could be the first step toward forming a new football conference.
The four-year syndication deal with Jefferson Pilot Teleproductions includes every major Division I-A football program in the East except Penn State. Besides Notre Dame, the schools are Army, Boston College, Navy, Pittsburg, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, and West Virginia.
“It’s an alliance right now, but hopefully it will turn into a conference,” said Mike Burg, executive producer of Charlotte, N.C.-based Jefferson Pilot. “That’s clearly our intent. That’s everybody’s intent.”
Notre Dame, despite its involvement in the television package, said it has no intention of joining a conference.
