Hundreds of Pakistani army troops and policemen swept through a predominantly Afghan bazaar on the outskirts of Karachi, removing about 20,000 refugees as a prelude to forcing them back to camps close to the Afghan border, according to reports from the troubled port city. Police officials initially linked the operation to drug smuggling and gun-running activity in the bazaar, a center for Pakistan’s heroin trade. But Sind provincial police chief Salman Khaliq later said that the Pakistani government has made a decision to move all Afghan refugees in Karachi to the border camps. Police said they seized $255 million worth of drugs during the roundup. One person was killed and eight were injured during the raid.
