Henry Winston, chairman of the Communist Party USA for the past 20 years, has died in Moscow after a brief illness, the Tass press agency said today. He was 75 and died over the weekend.

Winston, who lived in Manhattan, died at a Moscow hospital where he was undergoing treatment for complications from an eye operation he received in the Soviet Union several years ago.

Winston, who was imprisoned in 1951 with other U.S. Communist leaders on charges of conspiring to overthrow the government, claimed that he went totally blind because of delays in treating a brain tumor diagnosed by doctors at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind.

A son of Mississippi sharecroppers, Winston became active in the Unemployed Councils during the Depression and later in the Southern Negro Youth Congress before joining the Communist Party.
