Reagan, Iran, Contras and Breaching the Public Trust
How can we prevent a major war in Central America? The headline (Dec. 10) “Honduran Jets Raided Nicaragua” has grave implications. The United States is bound by treaty to defend Honduras and we could easily be drawn into open conflict or be faced with reneging on our commitments.
Have we lost all control of our foreign policy in the area? Has the Iranian/Contra mess so weakened the presidency that the forces seeking to involve the United States militarily in Central America have taken over?
It is the current policy of the United States to support the Contadora process for a negotiated settlement. Have we grown so weak that we can no longer follow through on our own policies?
We, the American people, have a unique opportunity to give support to those in our government who want to see a negotiated regional solution to a regional problem. With the threat of nuclear war ever present, we have to learn to resolve our differences without going to war. Now is the time to make our voices heard.
