A government official Monday announced the establishment of two peace trusts funded by compensation paid by France over the sinking of the Greenpeace protest flagship Rainbow Warrior.

Acting Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer said the trusts, worth $2.4 million, will promote peace and the environment. The two trusts have taken the largest slice of the $7 million compensation paid to New Zealand by France over the Rainbow Warrior sabotage. With five minor projects announced earlier this year, the fund has now been fully spent.

The Rainbow Warrior, flagship of the international environmental group Greenpeace, was mined and sunk at an Auckland dock in July, 1985, by agents of the French secret service. The converted trawler was preparing to lead a major protest campaign against France’s nuclear test site at Mururoa Atoll in the South Pacific.
