Joel Gaspoz of Switzerland won a men’s World Cup giant slalom , thwarting Italian Richard Pramotton’s hopes of winning his third straight giant slalom.
Gaspoz, racing at Italy’s Val Badia, clocked the fastest time in the first heat, 1 minute 25.95 seconds, and had the second-best second run, 1:20.39, for a winning aggregate of 2:46.34. He beat Pramotton by 1.37 seconds.
West German Markus Wasmeier was third in 2:47.88, and Gaspoz’s Swiss teammate, Pirmin Zurbriggen, finished fourth in 2:48.05.
Zurbriggen holds the overall lead in the World Cup standings with 97 points. Wasmeier and Pramotton are tied for second with 93 each.
