The State Department warned U.S. citizens to avoid travel in the eastern part of Suriname. The former Dutch colony on the northern coast of South America has been torn by an insurrection led by a former Army private, Ronnie Brunswijk, whose followers have attacked economic targets, including the U.S.-owned Suriname aluminum plant in Moengo. “Insecurity and the increasing unavailability of basic food items and other necessary goods make it advisable for U.S. citizens to exercise caution and forbearance when traveling to or in Suriname,” the advisory said.
