Killer Hanged for 30 Seconds, Gets a Pardon

TEHRAN — A convicted murderer was hanged for 30 seconds but escaped with his life because the father of the victim pardoned him, the newspaper Kayhan reported today.
The man escaped death Wednesday and will be freed after recovering in a hospital, it said.
Under Iranian Islamic law, close relatives of a murder victim have the right to demand execution of the murderer or payment of “blood money,” or to forgive the person.
