California’s population, which passed 26 million in 1985, will reach 39.6 million by the year 2020, according to projections by the Department of Finance’s Population Research Unit which said that, if present trends continue, the Los Angeles area will add more residents than any other region and continue as the state’s population leader. The projections show that only San Francisco, among major urban areas, will show a decline, from 735,000 to 684,200.
