San Francisco welfare officials spent $2,000 a month to keep an unemployed editor from the East Coast fed and housed even though the man was not enrolled in any welfare program. The recipient, who lived in a pool side motel room, received the special help for 18 months after Social Services Commission President George Yamasaki Jr. interceded on his behalf, the San Francisco Examiner reported Sunday. Each month, city welfare officials spent $1,500 for the motel bill and gave the editor, whose name has not been disclosed, $500 for expenses. The money came from a “slush fund” which was created through intentional overpayments of city money for hotel rooms for the homeless. Mayor Dianne Feinstein heard allegations of improper use of city homeless funds in early December and turned the information over to the district attorney, said Deputy Mayor Hadley Roff.
