Edward Manning Jr.; Ran Coffee, Restaurant Firm

Edward Manning Jr., son of the founder of Manning’s Inc. and a former president of that coffee and frozen food company, died of cancer Saturday at his home in Menlo Park. He was 66.

Manning’s father and his uncle moved from Boston to Seattle in 1908 and started the coffee business that eventually grew to 40 Manning’s cafeterias and restaurants in nine western states.

The family moved to Palo Alto in 1928 and Manning, after graduating from Stanford University, served as vice president, general manager, then president of the company that was sold in 1970 to John Labatt Ltd. of Canada.

Manning later worked as a business consultant for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
