President Reagan announced today that he will nominate defeated Republican Sen. James Abdnor of South Dakota to be administrator of the Small Business Administration.

In a speech at a meeting where he received a report from the White House Conference on Small Business, Reagan said Abdnor “knows small business and knows the nation’s capital.”

Abdnor, 63, lost to Democratic Rep. Thomas A. Daschle in the November election. He has served in the Senate for one term. Before that, he had been in the House since 1973.
