Marks and Spencer PLC, Britain’s largest retailer, said today it will experiment with retailing in the United States by opening stores under its D’Alliard’s name in four New York shopping malls.

The clothing and food store chain said it has signed leases for sites in shopping malls in Watertown, Albany and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and will soon sign one for another mall in the same region. The stores, which will be small--about 4,000 square feet each--will sell women’s outerwear from D’Alliard’s, Marks and Spencer’s Canadian trading division.
