The governor’s assistant for education, William L. Cunningham, is leaving his post at the end of the year. Gov. George Deukmejian said Cunningham, 60, had told him last spring he would retire after the election. He had joined the Administration in July, 1983. Deukmejian issued a statement saying that Cunningham “leaves with my respect and gratitude for his significant contributions. . . . He has been a tremendous advocate for improvement of education for all levels in California.” Cunningham had been superintendent of the Sacramento County Office of Education from 1980 to 1983.
