The World Jewish Congress said that Nazi documents from World War II show that Austrian President Kurt Waldheim passed instructions to the Luftwaffe to deliver a group of captured British commandos to his intelligence unit. The documents contradict his earlier denial of any involvement in the handling of prisoners, the group said. The Nazi documents refer to the capture of 11 British commandos on the Greek island of Levitha on Oct. 17, 1943. A secret duty roster lists Waldheim as deputy chief of intelligence with responsibility for “prisoner interrogation,” the group said. It charged that related documents show that some prisoners delivered to Waldheim’s unit suffered ill treatment at the hands of the Gestapo.
