CIA Director William J. Casey, who is recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous brain tumor, is “fully conscious and sitting up periodically,” a Georgetown University Hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Hospital spokeswoman Cynthia Byers said doctors still are deciding how best to treat Casey, who was listed in stable condition.

Byers said the doctors were developing a treatment plan that will begin when he recovers further. Doctors have said they plan some form of anti-cancer therapy to prevent a recurrence, but the hospital has not said whether there is cancer in other parts of Casey’s body.

Surgeons removed the malignant tumor on Dec. 18, three days after Casey, 73, suffered two cerebral seizures.

White House spokesman Larry Speakes said that President Reagan has not spoken with Casey since the surgery.
