Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad signed an executive order banning the sale of cigarettes in state government buildings. Branstad cited what he said was clear evidence that smoking is dangerous even to nonsmokers exposed to smoke from other’s cigarettes. State officials said it was the first such ban in the nation. In addition to the ban, the governor requested that department directors establish smoke-free work areas in every state government office. Although cigarettes can no longer be sold in public areas of the state Capitol and most state offices, inmates in state prisons can still buy cigarettes.
