In the aftermath of a recent strike, two Orange County Transit District bus drivers were fired last week, and six others were suspended.
The fired drivers were accused of vandalism, but the district did not disclose details.
“It is not our policy to reveal that information,” said Joannne Curran, spokeswoman for the transit district. “However, the charges against the two drivers discharged were very serious. It violated the safety of passengers and also centered on vandalism. It was intolerable behavior.”
Juliene Smith, the general chairwoman of United Transportation Union Local 19, which represents the district’s 730 bus drivers who went on a 13-day strike in December, criticized the firings and suspensions. She said the union intends to file grievances that would seek to have the firings and suspensions rescinded.
