WIESBADEN, West Germany — A firebomb was hurled Saturday through a window at the state headquarters of the Free Democratic Party, the junior partner in Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s coalition.
No injuries were reported in the 4:30 a.m. attack, but the Molotov cocktail burned out a storage room on the ground floor that contained campaign material for the Jan. 25 national election.
A party spokesman for the state of Hesse estimated the damage to the office in Wiesbaden at $100,000.
Public opinion polls have predicted the center-right coalition of Kohl’s Christian Democrats and the small, liberal Free Democratic party will win a clear majority in the parliamentary election.
A poll taken by the Allensbach Demascopic Institute gave the Christian Democrats 46.9% of the vote and the Free Democrats 8.5%.
