There’s no doubt about it. “Promise,” the “Hallmark Hall of Fame” drama with James Garner and James Woods, was the best-written and most honest program I’ve ever seen on TV. (It was similar to the movie “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter,” which is also one of my favorites.) One can only hope that the writers, actors, producers and others associated with “Promise” will maintain this standard in future work. The problem is that lesser talents give us so much that means so little.
