The Soviet Union has offered to sell India an airborne early warning system to counter the possible sale of a more sophisticated type of U.S. warplane to Pakistan, the United News of India said. Quoting unidentified defense sources, the news agency said Moscow wants to sell India the system contained on the IL-76, a giant military transport aircraft used in Eastern Europe. The agency said Indian defense experts consider the plane inferior to the U.S.-made airborne warning and control system, or AWACS, carried aboard Boeing 707s. The Soviet Union is India’s main arms supplier.
