Governors took oaths of office in six states. In Boise, Ida., Democratic Gov. Cecil D. Andrus returned to the job he had won twice before. In Madison, Wis., new Republican Gov. Tommy G. Thompson took office. Democrat Mike Sullivan was sworn in at Cheyenne, Wyo. Evan Mecham, who lost gubernatorial bids in 1964, 1974, 1978 and 1982, took the oath in Phoenix, Ariz. Meanwhile, Gov. Richard H. Bryan, in Carson City, Nev., and Gov. Rudy Perpich, in St. Paul, Minn., both began second terms.
