Foreign Ministers of Gulf Council in Emergency Meeting
Foreign ministers of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council met Tuesday to discuss the escalation of the war between Iran and Iraq, a dispute over the upcoming Islamic summit and the status of economic negotiations with the European Communities members.
Riyadh radio said the two-day emergency meeting will focus on developments in the Persian Gulf and Middle East since last November’s summit, held by the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar.
The Saudi press quoted official sources as saying that top priority will be given to threats posed to the councils’ member states because of the current escalation in the war between Iran and Iraq.
Another main item on the agenda is a brewing controversy over a summit meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, scheduled to be held on Jan. 26 in Kuwait. Iran has threatened to boycott the meeting unless it is shifted to Pakistan or another “neutral” Muslim country.
