Local News in Brief : Saugus Schools to Put Tax Measure on Ballot

Share

Trustees of the Saugus Elementary School District will try again June 2 to get voters to tax developers to pay for school construction.

Supt. Charles A. Helmers said the school board decided Tuesday night to place a tax initiative on the ballot. School officials can see no other way to solve school crowding problems caused by rapid development, he said.

“We’re already at capacity,” Helmers said. “We’re using every available space.”

Saugus became the third Santa Clarita Valley school district to approve a tax initiative for the June ballot. In December, trustees of the Sulphur Springs and Castaic districts voted to place propositions on the ballot.

The Newhall elementary and William S. Hart high school districts are expected to take similar actions next week.

The initiatives, which propose taxes averaging about $6,000 on each new home, are identical to six ballot propositions that narrowly failed to receive the necessary approval of two-thirds of the voters in November.
