Bolivian President Victor Paz Estenssoro sought the suspension of top court judges in four of the country’s nine states because of their suspected ties to cocaine trafficking. In a letter to the Bolivian Senate, he asked that it suspend all the judges sitting on the superior courts of La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Oruro states while authorities examine accusations that they acted irresponsibly in drug-related cases. The Senate has the authority to dismiss judges. After Peru, Bolivia is the world’s biggest supplier of coca leaf, the raw material for cocaine.
