An Israeli-built reconnaissance drone fitted with a television camera and sensors will go into U.S. Navy service for the first time aboard the battleship Iowa when the ship departs today from Norfolk, Va., for the Central American coast, the Navy said. The remotely piloted Pioneer is based on the design of the Mastiff, a combat-proven drone that has flown over Lebanese battlefields. The World War II-vintage Iowa will be accompanied on “routine operations” in the Caribbean by the guided-missile cruiser Yorktown and a destroyer.
