Rio de Janeiro’s 110,000 bus drivers voted to continue a nearly monthlong strike for higher wages, leaving the city’s traffic in chaos as thousands of car owners drove to work. City officials temporarily abandoned plans to use troopers to drive state-owned commuter buses after groups of strikers threatened to damage any vehicle they saw in the streets. Union leaders reiterated that the walkout will continue until all their demands are met, including a wage increase of more than 70%. The shooting death of a union leader Wednesday has hardened their position, a union spokesman said.
