Costa Rican police detained 43 suspected Nicaraguan contras in a raid on an apparent safehouse outside the capital of San Jose, but no formal charges have been brought against them, Deputy Interior Minister Alvaro Ramos said. He added that no military gear or weapons were found in the house, located three miles west of the capital. Ramos said he is sure that all of those detained are “anti-Sandinistas.” Costa Rica, which has no standing army, has pledged neutrality and now prohibits the rebels fighting to topple Nicaragua’s Sandinista government from using its territory as a base for military operations.
