Mondale Drive Fined; Exceeded Spending Limits
Walter F. Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign has been ordered to pay $68,000 in fines for violating election law limits on spending and contributions, the Federal Election Commission disclosed Friday.
The FEC, continuing to wind up its audits on the 1984 elections, imposed the fine in a closed-door session last month after accepting an admission of violation by Mondale representatives.
An audit investigation determined that the former Democratic vice president’s primary campaign had spent more than the total permitted for candidates receiving federal matching funds.
Limits Exceeded in 3 States
It also found that Mondale accepted 303 individual contributions that exceeded the legal $1,000 limit, had exceeded the per-state spending limits in New Hampshire, Iowa and Maine and had failed to properly report refunds and rebates the campaign received.
