Tennis Roundup : Garrison Reaches Semifinals With Upset Win Over Sukova

Zina Garrison upset third-seeded Helena Sukova, 6-3, 6-1, Friday at Sydney, Australia, to advance to the semifinals of the $150,000 New South Wales women’s tennis championships.

Garrison attacked the net often and used a steady serve to beat the 6-2 Czech for the first time.

“Before I went into this match, I kept saying to myself, ‘I can’t lose again; she has beaten me so many times,’ ” said Garrison, who meets Australia’s Wendy Turnbull today. Turnbull beat Lori McNeil, 6-4, 7-5.

Second-seeded Pam Shriver defeated Sweden’s Catarina Lindqvist, 6-4, 6-2, and will meet Bulgaria’s Manuela Maleeva, who disposed of Japan’s Etsuko Inoue, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

At Auckland, New Zealand, unseeded Carl Limberger of Australia upset fourth-seeded Marcel Freeman, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to gain the semifinals of the New Zealand Open against Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands, who beat Bud Schultz, 6-7, 6-2, 4-6.

Today’s other semifinal will be between Derrick Rostagno and top-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia. Mecir defeated New Zealand’s Bruce Derlin, 6-2, 6-2. Rostagno outlasted India’s Ramesh Krishnan, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
