Bill Schultz, a former Kennedy High lineman who was an All-American this season at Glendale College, has signed a letter of intent with USC. Schultz, a 6-5, 270-pound sophomore tackle, helped lead the Vaqueros to a 10-1 record this season.

John Zentner III, an offensive lineman for Stanford who attended El Camino Real, has been named to UPI’s All-West Coast football team. Cardinal teammate Toi Cook, who went to Montclair Prep, was named to the team as a defensive back.

Zentner was ruled ineligible for Stanford’s appearance in the Gator Bowl after he tested positive for steroid use in an NCAA drug test.

David Djolakian of Glendale is the Western State Conference basketball player of the week. Djolakian, a 6-7 sophomore from Alemany High, had two games during the week and totaled 61 points.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paschal Catholic Church in Thousand Oaks for Phil Seghi, senior player personnel adviser for the Cleveland Indians.

Seghi, who had previously served as the team’s general manager, died of cancer Thursday in Thousand Oaks at age 68.

It was Seghi who hired baseball’s first black manager, Frank Robinson, to lead the Indians from 1975 to 1977, and Seghi who signed baseball’s all-time hit leader, Pete Rose, in 1960. At that point, Seghi was in charge of the Cincinnati Reds farm system.
