The Reagan Legacy

I cannot recall when last I felt sorry for a syndicated columnist, especially one whose views do not reflect my own philosophy. But I did on reading Ben Wattenberg’s column on the Reagan legacy. I read it closely and came to the only conclusion possible: even he had a hard time finding accomplishments to praise.
Wattenberg admitted that parts of Reagan’s adversaries’ case against him are credible, that “some of the personal criticism is probably valid,” that “Reagan’s budget deficit may yet produce disaster,” talks of “Reagan’s philosophical failure” and says that this has changed America “not entirely for the better.”
If ever a writer faced a tough job, to praise Reagan’s legacy must be one of the toughest.
