Beatrice Gafner of Switzerland, in only her fifth World Cup race, beat teammate and favorite Maria Walliser in a women’s downhill at Schwarznberg-Mellau, Austria.

Gafner, 35th to start, swept down the Spielmoos course in 2 minutes 8.71 seconds to snatch victory from Walliser, who clocked 2:09.14. Sieglinde Winkler of Austria scored her first Cup points of the season by coming in third in 2:09.49.

Walliser regained the lead in the overall Cup standings with 170 points. Teammate Vreni Schneider is second with 163 points and leads the downhill standings with 60 points to 46 for Canadian Laurie Graham.
