Soviets Need More Time to Restore Rembrandt Work
The restoration of Rembrandt’s 17th-Century masterpiece “Diana Is Saved,” badly damaged by an acid-throwing vandal in June, 1985, will take at least one more year, the Tass news agency said Sunday.
Officials had hoped the canvas would be ready for display at Leningrad’s Hermitage Museum late last year, but Tass said experts need at least another year to complete their work.
The painting, completed in 1636, was damaged by “a madman” June 15, 1985, in the Hermitage, Tass said. The vandal, who was arrested, splashed a vial of sulfuric acid on the canvas, damaging Diana’s figure.
