Federal lawyers accused doctors of greed at a hearing on a suit claiming the government is trying to force physicians to decide on participating in Medicare without knowing how much they can charge. “The physicians’ interest is in getting more money than Congress intended,” Sheila Lieber, a Justice Deparment attorney, told U.S. District Judge Barefoot Sanders in Dallas. The hearing stemmed from a suit filed against Health and Human Services Secretary Otis R. Bowen on Dec. 24 by the American Medical Assn., the Texas Medical Assn., the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society, seven Lubbock doctors and three of their patients.
