Dan Goldie, who won the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship playing for Stanford, powered his way into the second round of the Australian Open tennis championships Tuesday.

In other matches, former finalists John Sadri and Steve Denton were both eliminated.

Goldie, in his first year as a professional, recovered from a slow start to beat fellow American Mike DePalmer, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.

The 23-year-old serve-and-volleyer, who is a graduate economics student, needed fewer than two hours to oust DePalmer and move into the second round for a match with Russell Simpson of New Zealand.

Simpson defeated American Gary Donnelly, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, in his opening-round match.

Sadri, from Charlotte, N.C., was given a code of conduct violation and was fined $500 after allegedly spitting at a linesman in his loss to Australian Davis Cup player Wally Masur.

Masur defeated Sadri, who was beaten by Guillermo Vilas in the 1979 final, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0, in 2 hours 47 minutes.

South African qualifier Gary Muller eliminated Denton, of Houston, the beaten finalist in 1981 and 1982, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Masur will play American Kelly Jones, and Muller will face Australian Mark Woodforde.

Stefan Edberg of Sweden begins the defense of his men’s singles title with a match against American qualifier John Letts.

Edberg defeated fellow Swede Mats Wilander in the title match last year.

The world’s top-ranked player, Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, who is aiming to win a grand slam tournament title on grass for the first time, is top seeded, ahead of two-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker of West Germany and Yannick Noah of France.

Edberg is the fourth seeded, but his current form suggests he will be hard pressed to win the event.
