An organization that says it was promised $50,000 from USA for Africa and Hands Across America but was later turned down is suing the fund-raising groups.

The Jamaica Christian Fund and its executive director, Ernesto Montgomery, contend in their Los Angeles County Superior Court suit filed Wednesday that the groups never intended to hand over the money.

The suit said they were told they would get $25,000 from each campaign but that the money was “improperly withheld.”

The suit seeks the funds plus unspecified punitive damages.

Joyce Deep, spokeswoman for USA for Africa and Hands Across America, said the Jamaican fund was never promised any money. She said the group submitted a proposal but failed to qualify.

Montgomery has contended his group was denied money because he is black.
