Police shot two women and a man to death in the northeastern town of Darjeeling during protests by Gurkha separatists, the Press Trust of India reported Saturday.

Police opened fire Friday night after members of the Gurkha National Liberation Front blocked roads and attacked police to protest the arrest of 35 of the front’s supporters, the news agency said.

Dozens of people have been killed in the tea-growing hills of Darjeeling, West Bengal state, since Gurhkas started a campaign for autonomy 10 months ago. The Nepali-speaking Gurkhas form 90% of the population in the area.
