8 Held After Uganda Death Plot Report
Eight Ugandans have been arrested following a charge by President Yoweri Museveni that exiled former government ministers were plotting to assassinate current leaders, relatives said Sunday.
They said those arrested included William Mwangu, who is a former mayor of Jinja, Uganda’s second-largest town, and a former secretary general of the Uganda People’s Congress in the Jinja area. The party was in power in Uganda until July, 1985, when President Milton Obote, the leader, was overthrown in a military coup.
Most of the others were well-known UPC supporters in eastern Uganda, where Museveni has been touring and addressing public meetings.
Museveni told a meeting last week that several former Obote ministers were plotting assassinations and other crimes against the present leadership.
