Four hundred troops stormed the Golden Temple complex in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab and arrested 78 people in the immediate area, including six Sikh terrorists, police said. Punjab Police Chief Julius F. Ribeiro told reporters the four-hour operation was carried out after a tip that two terrorists of one radical faction had been killed by political opponents. The troops raided four residential buildings adjacent to the area of the temple, Sikhism’s holiest shrine. No bodies were found, police said. Sikh radicals are seeking to set up an independent state in the region.
